wow. i can’t believe this shirt was approved for production and actually put on the sales floor. as if we don’t have enough issues with young girls worrying about their physical appearance, now we want to send them the message that if they’re pretty they shouldn’t worry about having an education and developing their mind. wow. just wow. i’m sure whoever designed this shirt was trying for something sassy, but this just sends the wrong message. i’m all for fashion and taking care of yourself, but I think we as a society place too much emphasis on the external appearance of people like it’s the most important thing about a person. you can be pretty and well dressed, but if that’s all you have and that’s what you value most about yourself, then you have a huge problem.
parents play a big role in how a child views him/herself. if a parent is obsessive about their appearance and places a lot of importance on it, the child will think that’s how they’re suppose to act as well. parents pass on their own negative (hopefully positive) views of themselves to their kids. let’s not teach our kids to value what they see over what’s more important- their mind. i don’t know about you, but i don’t want our future to be too concerned about looking pretty to come up with solutions to our world’s problems. besides, kids shouldn’t be worrying about how they look, we should be nurturing their creativity and focusing on developing their minds, not their wardrobe, cause guess what? they’re going to grow out of it and they will have a lifetime of being concerned about how they look. so for now, can we let kids be kids? why are we in such a rush to make them grow up?
what’s even more disturbing than this shirt are the abercrombie push-up bikinis for little girls (click image of shirt above to get to the article, video about bikini is at the end of article). I mean really? wth?!? who thought that would be appropriate? i don’t get it! we chastise pedophiles for viewing children as sexual objects yet at the same time we give children the message that they should be sexual objects. wtf?!?
yes i’m pretty, but what’s better than that? i’m smart and i did all of my homework (well maybe 95% of it haha). there are millions of pretty people, and hell if you’re not pretty, you can get plastic surgery and get a makeover to become what you think is “pretty.” pretty is commonplace nowadays. if you want to stand out develop your mind and have something more to say than “omg that’s so cute” and “omg did you see my new so and so? isn’t it just so fetch?” when it comes down to it, i don’t care what you have or what you look like, if you’ve nothing to talk about besides the superficial, please move along.
i can write so much more about this, but i wont cause people should already know. now lemme go find my shirt that says “i’m too smart to worry about whether you think i’m pretty or not.”
